So the deciding moment has arrived and it appears I did no better than a semi-finalist status for the 2007 Adobe Design Achievement Awards, which still is a great accomplishment in itself. I was however hoping for bigger things, since I felt my design campaign for, Gender Diversity at the Rochester Institute of Technology, deserved it. The experience was great however, so congrats to all the finalists and honorable mention winners…and Adobe, you’d better be prepared for me next year. For now you can check the list of semi-finalists on the Achievement Awards page until Adobe posts the winners and honorable mentionalist on their website in early August. Included above are thumbnails of the work submitted to Adobe as well as photographs of the package I sent in for the semi-finalist round that turned out pretty nice. Take a look see.

Microsoft Surface, Multi-Touch Coffee Table

microsoft surface

I’d defend Apple to the grave, but when I witnessed a new product Microsoft is planning on releasing commercially, I was flabbergasted. The Microsoft Surface is a device that utilizes multi-touch sensitivity as well as a series of infra-red cameras to interact with objects placed on the coffee table surface. Although it’s being released commercially to hotels, casinos, corporations and stores, the pricey $5,000-$10,000 tag will not hold back consumers from trying out the beautifully designed in stores at the end of 2007. Even though the technology of multi-touch interfaces has been in development for years now, Microsoft is applying it in a way that may lead to a whole new technological interaction between consumer and touch-screen. Take a look at the video, it’s unreal (the wireless capabilities will blow your mind).

tarati

Industrial designer Branko Lukic has embarked on a mind-blowing concept for user interaction between consumer and cell phone. The Tarati features holes in the phone, in which passing a finger through will trigger a sensor to dial that number on the phone while having the numbers appear digitally on the interface. Sophisticated, sleek and with a sort of futuristic aesthetic, perhaps this is a option for cell phones to follow. Enjoy the gorgeous video created for the conceptual product as well, right here.

mattijn

Accompanied by his feline companion, photographer/painter/Photoshop extraordinare Mattijn creates fantastic pieces of work. Almost as if you’ve just stepped within the pages of The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe, the photographic compositions of Mattijn create some of the most surreal pieces I’ve ever witnessed. Each photo projects his great skill for photography and Photoshop as well as engulfs you in each photograph’s narrative. Take a look at his Flickr account, it’s worth it.

beer launching fridge

Seeing as the last blog post was dedicated to all the dads out there, I figured I’d even things out by posting a blog just for all the college students out there. No, it isn’t a dream folks, there really is a beer launching fridge that has been created. A Duke student has taken the effort to create a beer launching fridge, that can shoot about 10 cans approximately 13 feet by remote control. After a lot of hype around the fridge circulated back to the creator, he’s planning on producing a limited amount of beer launching fridges that will put you about $1,500 back. Even though it sounds steep, this price tag will get you a slightly larger fridge than his original design that can shoot about 20 beers. Life has never been better.

Do yourself a favor and check out the video demonstration as well.

Anti-Squirrel Bird Feeder

Not quite sure what it is, but my Grandpa and my Dad go crazy when they see a bunch of squirrels eating all their birdseed. Maybe they’re alone in that sense, but if not, this blog goes out to all those dads out there who hate squirrels trying to get a free meal. “Twirl-a-Squirrel” uses physics and the additional weight of the squirrel to start spinning the bird feeder until the squirrel needs to jump off out of pure dizzyness. There’s a video demonstration here.

Just great, Honda has taught their Asimo robots to run. What’s next, how to take care of themselves in a bar fight!? I’m not going to lie though, the video is pretty neat when you initially see the robot start to run.

Hey, do yourself a huge favor and visit Core 77’s tech blog as well. They update the blog numerous times a day with some great posts.

mutabor

The experienced design veterans known as Mutabor have made their mark on the design game. The site shows a great amount of Mutabor’s collection of work and if you’re a designer and you have a few extra books, I highly recommend the books they’ve published because they’re great for inspiration.

Mutabor has also been responsible for the design of Adidas’ new virtual venture in the way of purchasing shoes. It’s possibly the next generation of shoe shopping, since you’ll never have to try them on and you can customize they via LCD screen and touch-sensitivity. Check out Adidas’ innovative video here.

iconcertcal

Just tried the free plug-in iConcertCal and it’s great! The plug-in searches all the bands in your iTunes library and scans for concerts in the area. You can set your location and the radius in which iConcertCal searches. iTunes then links you to venues online so you can buy tickets and see more info on the concert.
